What to expect from Samsung’s new foldable phones

Samsungs-Galaxy-Z-Fold-3-Flip-3

Samsung is pushing deeper into the world of foldable phones with the upgraded versions of Fold 1 and 2 released in August. The largest smartphone manufacturer in the world is looking to keep off competition from Xiaomi and Apple, which are breathing down on its share of the market.

In fact, a new research by Counterpoint Research indicates that Samsung is no longer the biggest in the market with Xiaomi ranked number 1.

Here is what to expect from the two foldable phones the South Korean phone maker unveiled:

Samsung Z Fold

The Samsung Z Fold is a phone determined to win over foldable phones’ sceptics. It comes with an upgrade in hardware and software that is absent in two previous Samsung foldable phones. The upgrades guarantee a more durable exterior with a tougher display of over 80 percent and it is water-resistant.

The outside display is like a regular phone with a 7.6-inch display screen when it is unfolded and supports the S pen. There is also an under-display camera, making the screen more immersive than the previous models.

The z fold 3 looks and feels just like the previous version fold 2, but with a bunch of small changes that make it worthy of becoming a new generation smartphone.

The new gorilla glass victus on the front of the Z Fold 3, makes the phone slightly 2 millimetres thinner and lighter than Fold 2.

Z Fold 3 comes with an IPX8 water-resistant rating which means it can survive water from all directions and can even be submerged in water. It is important to note that Samsung chose IPX8 and not IP68 which is on Galaxy S21 series meaning it’s not dust resistant since solid particles can still enter inside the hinges and eventually ending up under the screen.

The device comes in three colours which are black, silver, and phantom green

The cover screen that’s outside is almost the same size and resolution is now 120 hertz also to match the inside screen which is a major improvement. The table form is still the same as before with the framing to the edge and curviness of the screen but if you notice anything missing from the screen that will be the hole-punch camera that was there last year. That selfie camera has moved to behind the display that means an immersive display.

The galaxy fold 3 also supports the S Pen and it carries along the note features. Unfortunately, the S Pen isn’t included in the phone since there is no space for it so if you desire to get it you will have to buy it separately.

There are two versions of the S pen, which are the s pen fold edition and the S pen pro.

The Galaxy z fold 3 has a starting price of $1,799 for the 256GB model, and the 512GB model costs $1,899 even though the price is still on the high side it is lower than the previous model.

Samsung Z Flip

The goal of the Samsung flip is to turn a normal-sized phone into something that fits easier into your pockets or bags. When the flip 3 is folded it is roughly the size of your wallet and when open it has the standard size of a flagship device.

You can say goodbye to tripods or stacking books to hold your phone while you take shots with Samsung’s new flex mode, which allows you to use your phone hands-free and standing on any surface by using half of the display.

The inside display is still the same as the previous model but also with a 120 hertz which wasn’t available before. This implies that it has higher refresh rates and you can still tone it down to a 60 hertz but your display will not be as smooth as you would want it. This is done with a new design refresh that includes a larger and more functional cover screen from the previous 1,1-inch screen to a 1,9-inch cover screen.

A cover screen is the outer display that Samsung has added to the phone, which allows you to view certain information that used to be only available when you switch on your phone. The cover screen shows the date and time by default but you can swipe through the widget that gives you music control, alarms, timers, and all these actions can be done without opening the phone for a glance.

The phone, which weighs 183g just like its the previous model, comes in a plastic front and a glass back called Gorilla Glass victus. This enables its durability and strength.

There is space for nano-SIM and e-SIM. With the new hinge improvement, the phone does not feel wobbly when unfolded and it comes with a side-mounted fingerprint reader.

Samsung Z Flip rocks a 12 MP main camera and a 12 MP wide-angle wide camera that shoots videos at 4k at30/60 fps. The selfie camera is a 10 MP camera that shoots at 4k at 30fps.

Like the Z Fold 3, the Samsung Z Flip also has an IPX8 rating which means it is water-resistant up to 1.5m for 30mins. It comes in over 7 arrays of colours that can suit you.

The Samsung flip 3 is going to start at $999, which is arguably the cheapest for any folding phone. But the baseline version starts at a 126GB of storage while the previous model started at 256GB, but with higher prices. It seems they were able to turn the narrative, the price is in line with current flagship devices that people are going to be buying but with the favourability that it folds in half.
