TWYI, Oracle, others partner to bridge skills gap in technology

Hundreds of students across universities in Nigeria and countries in East Africa have benefited from the Oracle Application Express (APEX) Bootcamp tagged ORACODE 4.0 which held in March 2020.

The program was organised by The Workplace Youth Initiative ( TWYI), a NonProfit Organization in collaboration with the Oracle Academy, the Nigeria Computer Society ( NCS), and the Nigeria Association of Computing Students (NACOS).

According to the organisers, the objective of the program was the first one to be held virtually due to the COVID-19 restrictions on public gatherings, is to bridge the existing skills gap between the youths and the workplace as well as teach them entrepreneurial skills.

The ORACODE 4.0 was also an opportunity for the three organisations to collaborate and develop the skills of undergraduates to build functional enterprise apps with low code using the Oracle APEX platform.

The low coding skills acquired by the attendees through the training, the organisers said, offered them an opportunity to leverage their new, marketable skills to achieve mini-projects that would provide the funds that can augment their allowances and upon graduation, create jobs for them in the booming Information and Communications Technology (ICT) sector.

The previous editions were held in TWYI’S training lab with Oracle Academy being the main sponsor. Abolade Toyeeb Olamilekan, National President, NACOS, described the training as timely and one that offered the opportunity to participants without a programming background to create solutions in the society using technology.

The Oracle Academy expressed commitment to computing education in Nigeria along with the provision of educators and their students with free relevant resources for teaching and learning. These resources include curriculum, learning resources, Oracle cloud technologies, software, support, and professional certifications.

Ayoola Iyiola, Executive Secretary, Nigeria Computer Society encouraged the participants to take full advantage of the privilege presented to them by the programme to provide solutions.
