MTN Nigeria has discontinued its 15GB weekly digital data bundle and apologised to subscribers for the sudden hike in price.
On Tuesday, there was outrage when MTN hiked its weekly promotional 15GB data plan to N6,000 from a promotional price of N2,000. However, company insiders told BusinessDay that the original price of the data plan was N4,500 but was incentivised to N2,000 to drive internet consumption.
In a message to subscribers on Thursday, MTN said, “We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200 percent increase on your favourite digital bundle. We could share several reasons and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story.”

The company apologised to subscribers, adding, “In this love season, don’t stay angry with us. Please forgive and forget. You matter die and we will never stop showing you how much.”
A company insider further told BusinessDay that the company has discontinued the data bundle. BusinessDay’s checks on the MoMo app and my MTN app confirmed this.
Telecom operators, including MTN, are in the middle of implementing a 50 percent or less tariff hike on all their services following a January 20 approval by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
