Adebayo Shittu, minister of communications, has organised an industry retreat with stakeholders to take place this weekend in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.
It is expected that the retreat will be attended by National Assembly members, key ministry officials, CEOs of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Nigerian Communication Satellite (NIGCOMSAT), National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST), Galaxy Backbone Limited, and Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF). Other key stakeholders would also be present at the two-day retreat.
According to a statement by Victor Oluwadamilare, the minister’s special assistant on media, the theme of the retreat is: ‘Repositioning the Nigerian Communications Sector as the Key Driver of the Nigerian Economy.’ This event will be held at the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA), Ibadan, between January 22 and 23.
Shittu, in his avowed determination to reposition the communications sector in tandem with the change agenda of President Muhammadu Buhari, since assumption of duties as Minister of Communications, had embarked on various inquisitions and fact-finding exercises, the result of which culminated in the forthcoming retreat.
It was discovered that considerable efforts made in the past to mainstream ICT into vital aspects of life in the country have unfortunately been undermined by the lack of an integrated framework for utilisation of ICT for socio-economic development.
