Iran moved to the top of FIFA 2026 World Cup Group G after a hard-fought 0-0 draw with 10-man Belgium in Los Angeles, despite ongoing off-field challenges.
The result leaves Belgium, 2018 World Cup semi-finalists, under pressure to secure qualification after a second consecutive draw, while Iran continue to defy expectations amid significant disruption to their preparations.

Iran have faced visa complications and travel restrictions linked to geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, with the team only permitted to enter the United States one day before each match.
However, they have shown resilience on the pitch, producing disciplined performances across their opening two games.
Belgium’s task became more difficult 24 minutes from time when defender Nathan Ngoy was shown a red card for a professional foul on Mehdi Taremi. At 23, Ngoy became the youngest player sent off at a World Cup since 2014.
Despite dominating possession and registering 11 shots in a low-quality first half, Belgium were repeatedly frustrated in the final third.
They nearly broke the deadlock through Youri Tielemans, while Iran briefly thought they had taken the lead in the 25th minute when Taremi finished a cleverly worked free-kick routine. The effort was ruled out for offside after a VAR review.
The draw means all three Group G matches so far have ended level, leaving the section finely balanced heading into the final round of fixtures.
Belgium sit on two points and face New Zealand in their final group game, while Iran require at least a point against Egypt to strengthen their qualification hopes.
For Iran, the result marks the first time they have avoided defeat in their opening two World Cup matches, offering momentum ahead of a decisive clash in Seattle.
