Ghana head coach Carlos Queiroz praised his side’s tactical intelligence and resilience after the Black Stars secured a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L match of the FIFA 2026 World Cup at BMO Field in Toronto.
The four-time African champions were forced to endure long periods without possession as Panama controlled large spells of the contest and disrupted Ghana’s attacking rhythm.

However, Caleb Yirenkyi’s decisive strike proved enough to hand the Black Stars all three points and a winning start to their World Cup campaign.
Queiroz applauds team’s game plan
Speaking after the match, Queiroz said Ghana executed their strategy perfectly against a well-organised Panamanian side.
“We battled like warriors,” Queiroz told ITV.
“We won the game with our brains. First, we had to suffer against a great team.
“They know how to play. We knew they would control the game. But step by step, our strategy was to let them come. This is the way to win.”
The Portuguese tactician admitted his side had to remain patient and disciplined before capitalising on their opportunity to strike.
Black Stars make winning start
The victory lifts Ghana to second place in Group L, behind England, who defeated Croatia 4-2 in the group’s other opening fixture.
With three points secured, the Black Stars have put themselves in a strong position ahead of a crucial run of matches in the race for a place in the knockout stages.
Tough tests await
Ghana’s attention now turns to a blockbuster clash against England at Gillette Stadium on June 23 before they conclude their group-stage campaign against Croatia on June 27.
The Black Stars will hope to build on their positive start as they target a return to the World Cup knockout rounds for the first time since their historic quarter-final run at the 2010 tournament in South Africa.
