England manager Thomas Tuchel has admitted the Three Lions “desperately” need Bukayo Saka as they prepare for their final Group L fixture of the FIFA World Cup 2026 against Panama at MetLife Stadium on Saturday.

Tuchel also hinted at changes to his starting line-up following England’s frustrating 0-0 draw with Ghana in their second match.

Saka Closing In on Return

Noni Madueke has started both of England’s matches on the right flank, but Tuchel revealed that Saka, who has been recovering from an Achilles problem, is edging closer to full fitness and could be in contention to start.

“He seems to be more and more ready and will hopefully push, and then we will see what is coming,” Tuchel said at his press conference on Wednesday.

“He’s getting there, and there are more and more training sessions, so he needs to have more sessions now. Two sessions to be ready for Panama.

“We need it from everyone. It’s not like Bukayo comes back and everything is solved, and I don’t want to put this on his back. He is a top player. That’s why he is with us.

“We need him desperately, like every other player, in top shape and pushing.”

Tuchel Defends England Performance

England dominated possession against Ghana but failed to find a breakthrough, producing a performance that drew criticism despite extending their unbeaten start to the tournament.

Tuchel acknowledged that the match was not the most entertaining spectacle but defended his side’s approach.

“There is a long way to go, and no one won a World Cup with four goals per match and going for it,” he said.

“We always want to go for it, and our responsibility is to bring everything to the table.

“I know it’s not an easy watch, I know. Maybe I watch it differently from the sideline as a coach. I know what we wanted and what we had to take care of.

“I know it’s not exciting, but it needs two to tango.”

England head into their final group match needing a positive result against Panama to secure their place in the Round of 32 and potentially top Group L.
