Virgil Van Dijk has shrugged off concerns about Liverpool’s recent form, insisting the Premier League leaders remain firmly on course for the title.
A quick-fire equaliser from substitute Diogo Jota, just 22 seconds after coming on, salvaged a 1-1 draw for Liverpool at Nottingham Forest on Tuesday. Despite a dip in form that has seen Arne Slot’s side win just three of their last seven league matches, Liverpool maintain a six-point lead over second-placed Forest, with Arsenal set to face Tottenham on Wednesday night.
The Reds also suffered a setback last week, losing 1-0 to Tottenham in the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals. However, Van Dijk dismissed any notion of a crisis.
“Ooh, so we are in a crisis now?” joked the Dutch international when questioned about Liverpool’s patchy form.
“It only confirms the Premier League is a very tough league where you play against opponents who are very good. It was always going to be tough, same with [Manchester] United at home with their new manager and the game plan they have been showing, especially against the bigger teams.”
Van Dijk emphasised the importance of resilience in navigating the challenges of the league:
“Every game is tough. We have to find a way to win. If we play like we did in the second half and keep fighting, keep trying, and keep creating opportunities, I am very confident we will score goals like we have been doing all season.”
Liverpool’s ability to come from behind has been a hallmark of their campaign, with the team rallying in five of their last seven league games, including a dramatic 2-2 draw against Manchester United. Van Dijk praised his teammates for their character but acknowledged the need for improvement:
“It shows resilience. No one wants to come from behind, so we have to keep working on that and have everyone in the best shape to prevent it. All we can do is try to do better in the next game.”
Reflecting on the draw at the City Ground, Van Dijk admitted it felt like two points dropped, particularly after conceding Chris Wood’s early goal. Liverpool dominated the second half, with goalkeeper Matz Sels denying Jota twice and Ola Aina blocking a late effort from Mohamed Salah on the line.
“We should have won, could have won, but the reality is we take a point at a difficult ground,” said Van Dijk.
Liverpool will look to return to winning ways as they continue their pursuit of Premier League glory.
