Nigeria’s Super Eagles will face European giants Portugal in a high-profile international friendly on Wednesday night in Leiria, with both teams looking to build momentum ahead of important competitions.

Although officially a friendly, the match at the Estádio Dr. Magalhães Pessoa carries significant importance for both managers. Portugal coach Roberto Martinez is aiming to extend his side’s unbeaten run and sharpen preparations for the FIFA World Cup, while Super Eagles manager Eric Chelle seeks to maintain his impressive record since taking charge of Nigeria.

Chelle has overseen 24 matches in 15 months, losing only once in regulation time, a pre-Africa Cup of Nations friendly against Egypt in December 2025 when he fielded an understrength squad.

Portugal in Strong Form Ahead of World Cup Build-Up

Portugal enter the contest in strong form, unbeaten in their last four matches, with victories over the United States and Chile and a draw against Mexico.

Their last defeat came seven months ago against the Republic of Ireland. Wednesday’s game is also their final warm-up before opening their World Cup Group K campaign against the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Ronaldo-Led Squad Poses Major Test for Nigeria

Martinez has assembled a star-studded squad led by Cristiano Ronaldo and featuring Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, João Félix, Rafael Leão, Gonçalo Guedes, Rúben Dias and Diogo Dalot. Fernandes was instrumental in Portugal’s recent win over Chile, scoring and providing an assist.

Iwobi Set for 100th Cap Milestone

Nigeria will draw motivation from midfielder Alexander Iwobi, who is set to earn his 100th international cap. The milestone provides added significance for the Fulham star as he leads the Super Eagles midfield against one of Europe’s strongest sides.

Super Eagles Missing Key Stars but Retain Depth

The Super Eagles will be without key forwards Victor Osimhen and Ademola Lookman, but Chelle still has quality attacking options in Samuel Chukwueze, Moses Simon, Paul Onuachu, Terem Moffi and Akor Adams.

Philip Otele has also impressed in recent outings, including the Unity Cup in London and last week’s friendly against Poland.

At the back, Abdullahi Bewene could retain his place after an encouraging debut against Poland. While defender Igoh Ogbu has withdrawn through injury, Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey and Emmanuel Fernandez remain available.

History Favours Portugal

Portugal won the last senior meeting between the two sides 4-0 in Lisbon in 2022. The Europeans have also previously beaten Nigeria at the youth level, including the 1989 FIFA U-20 World Cup final.

However, Chelle’s squad views Wednesday’s clash as a valuable benchmark against elite opposition.

Kick-Off

With Portugal preparing for the World Cup and Nigeria continuing its rebuild, a competitive contest is expected in Leiria. Kick-off is 8:45 p.m. in both Portugal and Nigeria.
