Nigerian sprinter and African champion Favour Ofili has qualified for the semi-final of the women’s 200m race at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
The 21-year-old sprinter delivered a commanding performance, winning her heat in 22.24 seconds. Her impressive run saw her defeat strong contenders like Great Britain’s Dina Asher-Smith and Gina Bass-Bittaye.
Ofili, a Commonwealth Games silver medalist, has now set her sights on Monday’s semifinal and potential final races, aiming to make a lasting impression in her Olympic debut and potentially secure a medal.
This achievement comes days after Ofili, All-African Games silver medallist announced that she would not take part in the 100m women’s race at the Paris Olympics due to administrative failures by the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC).
Ofili’s qualification is particularly noteworthy given the administrative hurdles of the Athletics Federation of Nigeria (AFN) and the Nigerian Olympic Committee (NOC), which prevented her from competing in the 100m event. Despite the setback, she has showcased remarkable resilience and determination.
With her eye on the podium, Ofili will now focus on the semifinals, where she aims to secure a place in the final and challenge for a medal. Her strong performance has ignited hopes for a historic Nigerian victory in the sprint event.
