The 2025 ITTF Africa West Regional Championships have delivered an electrifying start at the Teslim Balogun Stadium in Lagos, featuring top talents.
Nigeria have lived up to their billing as favourites, with their men’s team storming through Group 1 in dominant fashion.
The trio of Matthew Kuti, Taiwo Mati, and Abdulbasit Abdulfatai were flawless, defeating Liberia via walkover before cruising past Ivory Coast 3-1, led by the resilient Oba Oba Kizito. The emphatic victories secured Nigeria a semifinal spot and reaffirmed their regional dominance.
Group 2, which includes Ghana, Togo, Guinea, and Benin Republic, remains hotly contested, with several matches still undecided as teams battle for the final semifinal places.
Among the early standout performers were Côte d’Ivoire’s Audrey Diama and Eve Ndah, who, despite not recording wins, impressed with their technical skills and determination, a promising sign for the future of Ivorian table tennis.
The championship opened with a vibrant ceremony featuring a colourful march-past and inspiring remarks from officials and dignitaries. Countries represented include Ghana, Benin Republic, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, Togo, and Burkina Faso, all bringing energy and excitement to the prestigious event.
Ferdinand Sonou, Vice President of ITTF Africa West, praised the host country for its excellent organisation.
“I warmly thank the Nigerian and Lagos State authorities for their unwavering support. These championships are not just about competition; they are about unity, diversity, and inspiring the next generation of athletes,” he said.
President of the Nigeria Table Tennis Federation (NTTF), Ishaku Tikon, represented by Secretary General Olusoji Akanmu, echoed the sentiment in his welcome address, applauding the Lagos State Government’s continuous backing and reaffirming Nigeria’s commitment to leading the growth of table tennis across West Africa.
As the tournament builds momentum, anticipation is now focused on the team event finals set for Thursday, July 17.
