The New York Knicks ended a 53-year wait for an NBA championship on Saturday, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 94-90 in Game 5 of the NBA Finals to secure their first title since 1973.

Led by a game-high 45 points from Jalen Brunson, the Knicks wrapped up the best-of-seven series 4-1 and completed a dominant postseason run in which they lost only three games.

Brunson produced a performance for the ages and was named NBA Finals MVP after inspiring New York to another remarkable comeback victory on the road in front of a large contingent of travelling Knicks supporters.

The Spurs started strongly once again and held several double-digit leads throughout the contest, but the Knicks steadily chipped away at the deficit before taking their first lead of the game with 3:40 remaining.

San Antonio were unable to respond as New York sealed a historic triumph and denied Victor Wembanyama and his young teammates on their home court.

The victory completed a memorable championship run for the Knicks, who had already stunned the basketball world by recovering from a 29-point deficit in Game 4 to record the largest comeback in NBA Finals history.

On Saturday, they once again overturned a sizeable deficit, trailing by 16 points in the second quarter and by 10 early in the fourth before Brunson took over.

“I’ve got no words,” Brunson said after setting a Knicks Finals scoring record, surpassing Willis Reed’s 38 points in Game 3 of New York’s 1970 championship series against the Los Angeles Lakers.

“I don’t know what I’m feeling,” added Brunson. “I’m in awe. Whenever someone counts us out, we find a way to come back and do something about it.”

French sensation Victor Wembanyama finished with 19 points, 14 rebounds and five blocks, while rookie Dylan Harper contributed 25 points off the bench for the Spurs.

However, the Spurs, who had eliminated defending champions Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals, were unable to withstand the resilience and determination of the Knicks.

The title crowns a dramatic playoff journey that reignited basketball fever across New York City.
