The Royal Moroccan Football Federation has named Spanish football legend Andrés Iniesta as the new sporting director for the Moroccan national team as part of a major restructuring of the country’s football project.

The former Barcelona and Spain national football team midfielder has reportedly reached an agreement in principle to join Morocco’s technical leadership structure.

The federation aims to leverage his experience at the highest level of the game to strengthen the national team’s sporting strategy and long-term development.

Iniesta will focus on building a “unified operating system” linking the senior national team with youth academies and women’s football structures.

His immediate priority will include preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup as part of the country’s long-term “Morocco 2030” roadmap. Morocco is preparing to co-host the 2030 FIFA World Cup alongside Spain and Portugal.

Iniesta has been tasked with developing a distinct football identity for Morocco and ensuring tactical consistency across all levels, from the U-15 teams to the senior national side.

The move comes amid a broader restructuring of the national team’s technical setup. Mohamed Ouahbi has been appointed as the new head coach, replacing Walid Regragui, to lead the Atlas Lions into the 2026 tournament.

The appointment is widely seen as part of Morocco’s broader ambition to elevate its football project following the country’s historic rise in world football and with an eye on future global tournaments, particularly the 2030 World Cup that it will co-host.
