New Era for Mercedes
Mercedes has officially launched its 2025 Formula 1 car ahead of pre-season testing in Bahrain, marking the team’s first season without Lewis Hamilton.
The British-based outfit digitally unveiled the W16, just days after showcasing its new livery at Formula 1’s high-profile season launch in London. This signals the beginning of a new chapter, with 18-year-old rookie Kimi Antonelli stepping in to replace the seven-time world champion alongside George Russell.
Former Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas, who raced for the team from 2017 to 2021, returns in a reserve role.
Mercedes Eyes Comeback
Mercedes, which dominated F1 with eight consecutive constructors’ titles from 2014 to 2021, showed signs of resurgence in 2024, securing four race wins—two each for Russell and Hamilton. However, an inconsistent car saw the team finish fourth in the constructors’ championship behind McLaren, Ferrari, and Red Bull.
“It is going to be a highly competitive season,” said team principal Toto Wolff. “We saw last year just how close the field was. You couldn’t predict race-to-race who would be at the front, and I expect this year to be even tighter. We have to be at our very best if we want to challenge for championships.”
Russell Ready to Lead the Charge
Wolff expressed confidence in Russell’s ability to compete at the highest level.
“George has proven that he is one of the very best drivers on the grid, capable of competing for the drivers’ championship if we can give him a car capable of doing so,” he added.
Russell, 27, is eager to get back on track, with pre-season testing scheduled in Bahrain from Wednesday to Friday.
“I feel like last year was my strongest in F1,” Russell said. “This coming season will be my seventh in the sport and fourth with the works Mercedes team, and I’m working hard to improve year-on-year. As a team, we are incredibly motivated to build on last season.”
Antonelli’s Big Break
Antonelli, stepping into the highest level of motorsport at just 18, is excited to begin his F1 journey.
“It is a great opportunity, and I am very thankful to everyone at Mercedes for the faith and trust they’ve placed in me,” he said.
