Manchester United are exploring options to bolster their midfield, with Monaco’s Youssouf Fofana emerging as a potential target. The Red Devils have been active in the transfer market this summer, seeking reinforcements to support their push for domestic and European success.
With Donny van de Beek and Sofyan Amrabat no longer at the club and the futures of Scott McTominay, Christian Eriksen, and Casemiro uncertain, the Red Devils are looking to strengthen their midfield options.
The 25-year-old Frenchman had a good outing in Ligue 1 last season and is seen as a potential long-term replacement for former United midfielder Paul Pogba. His versatility and energy make him an attractive prospect for Erik ten Hag’s side.
McTominay’s interest from Premier League rivals Fulham and Tottenham, although he prefers to remain and fight for his place at Old Trafford. Despite this, Manchester United continue to be linked with several midfield additions to support the promising Kobbie Mainoo.
PSG’s Manuel Ugarte was a significant option, but those links have faded as Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi has emerged as a potential target. Burnley’s Sander Berge is also on the radar, although former boss Jose Mourinho could potentially disrupt that deal.
Luca Bianchin of La Gazzetta dello Sport has provided an update on another player linked with United: Monaco star Youssouf Fofana. The 25-year-old French international, compared to former United midfielder Paul Pogba, is highly regarded in French football for his all-action defensive midfield play.
Bianchin claims that United are looking to beat AC Milan to Fofana, who has also been heavily linked with West Ham. Fofana, who came through Monaco’s famed academy, is considered well-suited to the pace and intensity of the Premier League and would be a strong addition to United’s midfield.
Fofana’s market value, around €30 million, makes him an attractive option given that his contract expires next summer. Last season, he scored four goals and provided four assists for Monaco in 35 appearances and made three substitute appearances for France at Euro 2024.
If signed, Fofana could be a direct replacement for McTominay, should Erik ten Hag decide to part ways with the Scotland international. United have rebuffed an offer from Fulham for McTominay, but the London club is expected to return with a £30 million bid, while Tottenham remains interested.
As the transfer window progresses, United will continue to assess their options and prioritize midfield reinforcements to build a squad capable of challenging for top honours.
