Manchester City have secured a fourth FA Cup final in a row after coming from behind to beat Southampton 2-1 on Saturday.
Championship high-flyers Saints kept City at bay and then delivered what looked like a famous FA Cup moment when Finn Azaz put the Saints in front with 11 minutes remaining.
However, City kept on knocking on the door against a stubborn Saints defence and Jeremy Doku’s deflected effort on 82 minutes drew them level.
Extra-time looked on the cards but Nico Gonzalez produced a moment of Premier League quality to win the game with a rasping strike from 25 yards that flew into the top corner.
A domestic treble is still on the cards for Pep Guardiola’s men, who will play Leeds or Chelsea in the final.
“Every time you reach the final you’re like wow what a journey it has been. Reaching the final again is unbelievable.
“I was analysing the game in the first half. We were playing in the middle a lot. I knew that I had to bring a threat and make it uncomfortable for the full-backs,” Jeremy Dolu, Manchester City winger said after the win.
The winger added that he needs to be more selfish going forward as City look ahead to another FA Cup final at Wembley.
“Everybody tells me I need to be more selfish. When I have the ball, the first thing I think is ‘who is free?’ Instead of ‘where is the goal?’ I have to be more selfish in those moments.”
Doku said Southampton played so well and deserve to win on the night. “I watched their game against Arsenal and I felt they deserved to win.
“They have a lot of quality players, I was not surprised [by how good they were],” Doku said.
Wayne Rooney, former Manchester United striker, said the Saints held their place against City, but were unlucky losing to City.
“In the second half, Southampton defended the box very well and the one time they didn’t get out to block a shot. Nico Gonzalez scored the winning goal,” Rooney said.
However, Manchester City’s winning goalscorer Nico Gonzalez, said he’s set for his second FA Cup final and hope City win this time.
“It was amazing to score at the end. In this amazing stadium, with this atmosphere, an amazing feeling.
“I had chances to shoot because they were defending so deep. I was waiting for the chance and I gave it everything.
“It has been a really important week for us. We are alive in the league and in another final.”
