British boxer Lawrence Okolie is facing a possible lengthy boxing ban after returning an adverse finding in a pre-fight anti-doping test.

The former cruiserweight world champion was scheduled to face Tony Yoka in Paris on Saturday as part of his transition to the heavyweight division. However, Queensberry Promotions confirmed the development on Tuesday, stating that the Voluntary Anti-Doping Association (VADA) had notified them of the failed test.

Okolie tested positive for GHRP-2, a banned substance that stimulates the release of Human Growth Hormone (HGH), which can enhance muscle growth and reduce body fat. The 33-year-old was subsequently withdrawn from the bout.

If found guilty of a doping violation, Okolie could face a ban of up to four years, although this may be reduced to two years if he proves the substance entered his system unintentionally.

Responding to the situation, Okolie suggested the result may be linked to medical treatment for an injury sustained during training.

“Before anyone starts imagining the worst, following my bicep injury last year, I sustained an elbow injury on the same arm during this camp,” he said. “I had treatment on it, and now we are here. I will fully cooperate with all relevant authorities, and I’m confident any investigation will clear my name.”

Okolie, who won his first world title in 2021 against Krzysztof Głowacki, has also held titles at bridgerweight and was aiming to establish himself among the heavyweight elite before this setback.
