Nigeria’s top-ranked fencer, Inkosi Brou, will spearhead the country’s campaign at the 2026 African Senior Fencing Championships in Abidjan, marking his second appearance at the continental showpiece scheduled from May 31 to June 6.

Despite being born and raised in the United States, Brou, grandson of Dora Akunyili, has represented Nigeria since October 2023.

He made history in 2024 by winning Nigeria’s first international fencing medal, claiming silver at a World Tournoi Satellite Cup in Iceland.

Strong supporting cast for Team Nigeria

Brou will be joined in the men’s sabre event by Oluwafolayemi Akinyosoye and Phoenix Zaoku-Sabre. Akinyosoye, 21, impressed at the 2025 edition in Lagos, reaching the quarterfinals, and returns with valuable experience from competing at cadet and junior levels for England.

Olympic ambition and long-term vision

As Brou continues to compete regularly on the FIE World Cup circuit, his long-term ambition remains clear: qualification for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, where he aims to become Nigeria’s first Olympic fencer.
