FIFA President Gianni Infantino has reaffirmed that the 2026 FIFA World Cup will proceed as planned, despite growing uncertainty about the participation of the Iran national football team.

Speaking from Zurich during an online FIFA Council meeting, Infantino expressed confidence that all qualified teams will take part in the expanded 48-team tournament.

“FIFA is looking forward to all teams participating in the 2026 World Cup to compete in a spirit of fair play and mutual respect,” Infantino said.

“We have a schedule, and we want the World Cup to go ahead as planned.”

Iran’s involvement has come under scrutiny due to ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East. The team is currently scheduled to play group-stage matches in the United States, including fixtures in Los Angeles and Seattle against New Zealand, Belgium and Egypt.

However, Mehdi Taj, president of Iran’s football federation, has indicated that the country may boycott playing matches in the United States, citing recent conflicts.

“We will be preparing for the World Cup. We will boycott the United States but not the World Cup,” Taj said, adding that discussions with FIFA are ongoing regarding a possible relocation of Iran’s matches.

One potential alternative is Mexico, with President Claudia Sheinbaum confirming her country is ready to host Iran’s group-stage games if required.

Infantino acknowledged the broader challenges, noting that football cannot resolve geopolitical conflicts but can serve as a unifying force.

“FIFA can’t solve geopolitical conflicts, but we are committed to using the power of football to build bridges and promote peace,” he added.
