Super Eagles striker Victor Osimhen reportedly played a key role in persuading Nigerian-American basketball star Chimezie Metu to sign for Galatasaray Basketball after personally speaking with his compatriot about the club and life in Turkey.

Metu, who had attracted interest from several EuroLeague clubs, has reportedly agreed to join the Turkish giants as Galatasaray continue strengthening their squad ahead of the new basketball season.

According to reports in Turkey, Osimhen’s glowing endorsement of both Galatasaray and Turkey proved decisive in convincing the Nigerian-American centre forward to choose the Istanbul club over other European offers.

The report claims the Galatasaray football star personally contacted Metu, sharing his experiences at the club and encouraging him to make the move. Osimhen’s positive references about the club’s passionate supporters, ambitious project and life in Turkey are believed to have played a significant role in the transfer.

Metu arrives with an impressive pedigree despite recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon suffered in March 2025.

The 28-year-old enjoyed a strong spell with Spanish side Gran Canaria after joining midway through the 2025-26 season. Following his return from injury, he averaged 14.1 points and 4.5 rebounds in 12 Spanish League appearances while playing 26 minutes per game.

The Nigerian-American also impressed with his efficiency, shooting 50 per cent from two-point range and 36.5 per cent from beyond the arc.

Before his injury, Metu enjoyed an encouraging debut EuroLeague campaign with Barcelona during the 2024-25 season.

He averaged 11.0 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 1.0 assist in 20 minutes per game, while posting an efficiency rating of 11.8. The former NBA forward also shot 62.4 per cent on two-point attempts and 36.4 per cent from three-point range.

If confirmed, Metu’s arrival would represent another significant addition for Galatasaray Basketball as the club looks to challenge for domestic honours and make a strong impact in European competition.

Osimhen, meanwhile, continues to enhance his influence beyond football, with the Nigerian striker reportedly helping convince one of Africa’s top basketball talents to continue his career in Istanbul.
