Seven-time Formula One champion Lewis Hamilton has thrown his weight behind bringing a Grand Prix back to Africa, with F1 officials set to meet with representatives from Rwanda to discuss a potential race.

Speaking on Thursday, Hamilton questioned the absence of Africa on the F1 calendar, asking, “Why are we not on that continent?”

F1 chief executive Stefano Domenicali has scheduled a meeting next month with Rwandan representatives, who have put forward a serious proposal for hosting a race. The last African Grand Prix was held in South Africa in 1993, and while the desire to return to the continent is strong, Domenicali emphasized the need for the right investment and strategic plan.

Hamilton, however, believes the time is right for an African Grand Prix. “We can’t keep adding races elsewhere while neglecting Africa,” he said. “A Grand Prix would showcase the continent’s potential and boost tourism.”

The 39-year-old revealed he has been in contact with officials in Rwanda, one of his favourite destinations, as well as those in South Africa. He recently travelled across Africa during F1’s summer break, visiting refugee camps with UNHCR.

“It’s hard to imagine the struggles of refugees without experiencing it firsthand,” Hamilton said, reflecting on his trip. While pondering ways to contribute after his racing career, he remains committed to bringing F1 to Africa.

“There’s no excuse about tracks not being ready,” Hamilton countered. “There are existing tracks that could be utilised in the short term, followed by the development of permanent facilities.”
