UPDATE: Ethiopians win top prizes at Lagos City Marathon

Two Ethiopians. Sintayehu Legese and Meseret Dinkie have emerged winners of the men’s and women’s category of the 42 kilometers Access Bank Lagos City Marathon on Saturday.

Dinkie who is making her first appearance at the Lagos City Marathon crossed the last line at 2:17.28 to win the coveted title. The second and third positions in the women category also went to Ethiopian nationals, Almnesh Herepa and Kabela Chana.

In the men’s category, Kenyan athletes Kipkorir Joshua and William Yegon took the second and third positions respectively.

The winners of the top positions received a $50,000 cash awards. Access Bank also announced that the first ten winners in the men’s category  will receive a Credit Alert. From $8,000 to $50,000. Prize money totalling $185,000.

The first Nigerian athlete to cross the finished line Gideon Goyet, ran 2 hours and 30 mins. He was awarded a N3million cash prize.

According to the Lagos State government, 2,000 North Americans registered for the marathon while a total number of 4,000 participants from 58 countries in the world are participated in the competition.
