The Dutch Football Association (KNVB) has strongly condemned the online racist abuse directed at Netherlands players following their painful elimination from the FIFA 2026 World Cup.

The Netherlands were knocked out by Morocco in the Round of 32 on Monday, losing 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 draw following extra time in Monterrey, Mexico.

Liverpool forward Cody Gakpo gave the Netherlands the lead in the 72nd minute before Issa Diop headed home a dramatic stoppage-time equaliser to force extra time. Morocco eventually prevailed in the penalty shootout to book a place in the Round of 16.

In a statement, the KNVB thanked the players, coaching staff and supporters for their efforts throughout the tournament, which is being co-hosted by Canada, Mexico and the United States.

“We also extend our sincere appreciation to the supporters, those in the stadium, those watching from home, and everyone around the world who followed and supported the Netherlands,” the statement read.

However, the Dutch football governing body expressed deep concern over the racist and discriminatory abuse directed at some of its players on social media after the defeat.

“Football brings people together, regardless of origin or background,” the KNVB said.

“We have seen online reactions in which players have been subjected to racist and discriminatory abuse following the team’s elimination.

“We draw a clear line against such behaviour. Racism and discrimination have no place in football, online or in our society.”

The Netherlands’ exit marked one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA 2026 World Cup, with Morocco progressing to the Round of 16 after another impressive display from the Atlas Lions.
