Chelsea reignited their hopes of European qualification with a resounding 5-0 victory over West Ham on Sunday at Stamford Bridge.
The Blues’ dominant performance not only strengthened their chances of securing European football for next season, but also propelled them above Manchester United into seventh place in the Premier League standings.
This commanding win came on the heels of Chelsea‘s recent 2-0 triumph over Tottenham Hotspur, further solidifying their position in the race for European spots.
With just three games remaining in the season against Nottingham Forest and Brighton away, followed by Bournemouth at home, Chelsea’s manager Mauricio Pochettino is under pressure to secure a second season in charge.
While Pochettino admits his fate is not solely in his hands, securing a place in Europe could sway the decision-makers in his favour.
The onslaught began in the 15th minute when Cole Palmer opened the scoring with his 21st league goal of the season.
Conor Gallagher extended Chelsea’s lead with a powerful volley, followed by goals from Noni Madueke and Nicolas Jackson, effectively sealing West Ham’s fate.
“I’m so happy for the players and staff,” said Pochettino, who has admitted the decision on whether he remains in charge next season is out of his hands.
“After the victory against Tottenham and to come back again after a few days is very good.
“It was a brilliant game, it was amazing. They reacted in the right way. I was so happy how we competed on Thursday and we have talented players to create chances and score goals.
“I was not relaxed in the dugout, I wanted to keep a clean sheet. West Ham are a powerful team on set-pieces and we needed some luck. It was important not just to win the game but also get the clean sheet.”
The victory did little to quell speculation surrounding the future of West Ham manager David Moyes, whose contract expires at the end of the season.
Reports suggest that the club has engaged in discussions with former Wolves boss Julen Lopetegui, indicating potential changes ahead.
