Chelsea 2-0 Sheffield United: Pochettino side returns to winning ways

Cole Palmer

Cole Palmer and Nicolas Jackson got on the scoresheet as Chelsea returned to winning ways from two straight defeats to beat Sheffield United 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.

The Blues, who had previously lost to Manchester United and Everton, broke the deadlock nine minutes into the second half when Cole Palmer tucked home following good work by Raheem Sterling.

Nicolas Jackson converted Palmer’s assist after Blades custodian Wes Foderingham palmed the ball into the path of the former Manchester City youth.

Cole Palmer continued his fine start to life in west London and was the difference for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, knocking in the opening goal from Raheem Sterling’s cut-back early in the second half before crossing for Nicolas Jackson to make it two.

The first half was instantly forgettable as Chelsea laboured without invention when in possession before the summer signing from Manchester City enhanced his reputation as a match-winner in a team that remains maddeningly inconsistent in the final third.

Chelsea had won just once since their buccaneering 4-1 victory at Tottenham in early November, but goals have dried up lately and against Blades in the first half they found every avenue to goal blocked.

Chelsea moved up to 11th place in the Premier League table, while Sheffield United remained bottom.
