Real Madrid produced a dominant display to defeat Manchester City 3–0 in their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 first-leg clash on Wednesday, while holders Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) secured a convincing 5–2 victory over Chelsea.

Valverde hat-trick stuns City

Uruguayan midfielder Federico Valverde scored a stunning first-half hat-trick to crush City at the Santiago Bernabéu Stadium, netting three goals inside a devastating 22-minute spell.

Madrid were without key attacker Kylian Mbappé, but Valverde’s brilliance ensured the Spanish giants seized full control of the tie ahead of next week’s second leg in Manchester.

The opener came when Valverde latched onto a long pass from goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, rounded Gianluigi Donnarumma and calmly slotted home.

He doubled Madrid’s lead with a low drive into the far corner before completing his hat-trick with a composed finish after combining with Brahim Díaz.

Madrid could have extended their advantage further after the break, but Vinícius Júnior saw his penalty saved by Donnarumma.

“It was incredible; you dream of nights like this,” Valverde told Spanish broadcaster Movistar. “It’s been a long time since I enjoyed a game like this.”

Despite the heavy defeat, City manager Pep Guardiola refused to rule out a comeback in the return leg.
“In football, you never know. We will try,” Guardiola said.

PSG overpower Chelsea in Paris

In Paris, PSG took a huge step toward the quarter-finals with a commanding 5–2 win at the Parc des Princes.

Bradley Barcola opened the scoring for the hosts before Malo Gusto equalised for Chelsea with a scruffy effort that slipped past goalkeeper Matvei Safonov.

Ousmane Dembélé restored PSG’s lead before halftime, but Enzo Fernández pulled Chelsea level again after impressive work from Pedro Neto.

However, the match swung decisively in PSG’s favour when Vitinha capitalised on a mistake by Chelsea goalkeeper Filip Jørgensen to put the hosts ahead for the third time.

Khvicha Kvaratskhelia then struck twice late on to seal an emphatic victory for coach Luis Enrique’s side.

Chelsea manager Liam Rosenior admitted his team lost control in the closing stages.

“The last 20 minutes were baffling. We need to stay calm in those moments, and we didn’t,” he said.

Both ties will be decided in next week’s second legs, with Madrid and PSG holding commanding advantages.
