Michael Carrick maintained his perfect start as Manchester United head coach, making it four wins from four with a 2–0 Premier League win over Tottenham at Old Trafford.

United’s task was eased by a first-half red card to Spurs captain Cristian Romero, whose rash challenge on Casemiro in the 29th minute left referee Michael Oliver with little choice but to dismiss the Argentine defender. It was Romero’s second sending-off of the season, compounding a miserable night for the visitors.

Romero had been at the centre of attention even before kick-off, having criticised Tottenham’s “disgraceful” lack of squad depth on social media earlier in the week. Spurs manager Thomas Frank had defended the comments as “passionate” and restored the centre-back to a reshuffled defence, a decision that backfired dramatically.

United capitalised on their numerical advantage just before half-time. Bryan Mbeumo opened the scoring in the 38th minute, applying a clinical finish to a cleverly worked corner routine involving Bruno Fernandes and Kobbie Mainoo.

Fernandes sealed the result late on, converting Diogo Dalot’s inswinging cross to cap a controlled display from the hosts, who rarely looked troubled despite not being at their fluent best.

Romero’s dismissal means he will now miss four matches, including the north London derby against Arsenal on February 22, further deepening Tottenham’s woes. Spurs have now gone seven Premier League games without a win, collecting just four points in that run and slipping to 14th, uncomfortably close to the relegation zone.

For United, the victory represented another step forward under Carrick, who continues to win over the Old Trafford crowd. The result sparked further chants in support of the interim boss as United consolidated their place in the top four and built momentum at a crucial stage of the season.
