Cape Verde head coach Bubista says his side have already proved that “nothing is impossible” as they prepare for a dream FIFA 2026 World Cup Round of 32 showdown against defending champions Argentina.
The tournament debutants have emerged as one of the biggest surprise packages of the World Cup after becoming the smallest nation by population ever to reach the knockout stages.
Cape Verde secured their historic place in the Round of 32 after a goalless draw with Saudi Arabia in Houston, finishing second in Group H behind Spain and ahead of Uruguay.

The Blue Sharks progressed unbeaten with three draws, becoming the first World Cup debutants since 2010 to advance beyond the group stage.
Reflecting on his team’s remarkable achievement, Bubista said Cape Verde’s success should inspire smaller football nations across the world.
“I didn’t know that,” he said after learning his team had become the smallest country ever to reach the World Cup knockout stage.

“In that case, we have become an example that small countries can also have big objectives, provided they have focus, determination and work with organisation.
“We have shown that nothing is impossible. We have represented our country, but we also represent Africa and small countries around the world.”
The Cape Verde coach said he had always believed his nation would one day compete on football’s biggest stage.
“I’ve always said that, sooner or later, Cape Verde would be on such a stage,” he said.
“Of course, it’s hard to make that kind of prediction, but we overcame several obstacles. We showed the world that you should not fear difficulties.
“Now we are in the knockout stage, and it’s amazing for our people, for everyone who identifies with our team, and especially for the players. They gave everything and showed personality and discipline. When those qualities come together, you get this kind of result.”
‘We will play with our identity’
Bubista refused to be intimidated by the prospect of facing Lionel Messi and Argentina in Miami, insisting Cape Verde will remain true to their style of play.
“First of all, we are proud to be able to play Argentina,” he said.
“This is a country with which we have longstanding ties. But above all, we desire to play with our identity regardless of who the opponent is.
“We will play our game with attitude and responsibility, knowing that Argentina have some of the best players in the world, plus Messi, who many believe is the greatest of all time.”
Cape Verde will face the reigning world champions on Friday, hoping to extend one of the greatest underdog stories in FIFA World Cup history and continue their remarkable debut campaign.
