The general secretary of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Veron Mosengo-Omba, has announced his decision to step down, with his departure coming amid the ongoing fallout from the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.

Mosengo-Omba said in a statement on Sunday that he was retiring to focus on personal projects. However, his exit coincides with mounting controversy over CAF’s decision to strip the Senegal national football team of the AFCON 2025 title and the last-minute postponement of the women’s tournament.

The developments have left CAF grappling with a growing crisis of confidence.

“I have decided to step down from my position as Secretary General of CAF to devote myself to more personal projects,” Mosengo-Omba wrote.

“Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions that some people have gone to great lengths to cast on me, I can retire with peace of mind and without constraint, leaving CAF more prosperous than ever.”

The 66-year-old, a deputy to CAF president Patrice Motsepe, had faced criticism for remaining in office beyond the organisation’s mandatory retirement age of 63. He was also accused by some staff of fostering a toxic work environment, although an internal investigation cleared him of wrongdoing.

Mosengo-Omba, who is of Congolese origin and also holds Swiss nationality, was appointed CAF Secretary General in March 2021.

According to reports, CAF’s Director of Competitions, Samson Adamu, is expected to take over as acting secretary general.

Meanwhile, CAF is awaiting a ruling from the Court of Arbitration for Sport on Senegal’s appeal after the governing body’s appeals committee overturned their 1–0 victory over Morocco national football team in the AFCON final.
