The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has postponed the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), initially scheduled for February 1 to 28, citing the unpreparedness of the host nations—Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania. However, the tournament’s draw will proceed as planned on Wednesday, January 15, in Nairobi, Kenya.
In a statement, CAF said: “Good progress has been made in Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda with the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training fields, hotels, hospitals, and other infrastructure.
However, the CAF Technical and Infrastructure experts advised that more time is required to ensure that the facilities meet the necessary standards for hosting a successful tournament.”
CAF confirmed that the eighth edition of the CHAN tournament will now take place in August 2025, with exact dates to be announced later.
Despite the postponement, preparations for the draw event remain on track. Kenya’s Sports Principal Secretary, Engineer Peter Tum, assured the public of the country’s readiness for the ceremony, which will be held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC) at 8:00 PM Nairobi time.
“We are prepared to host the draw tomorrow. All protocols are in place, and a dry run will be conducted to ensure everything is in order,” Tum said, emphasising that necessary security measures and event logistics have been finalised.
