Britain’s Dame Sarah Storey claimed her 13th Paralympic gold medal by winning the road cycling C5 time trial in Rio.

Her victory took GB to 35 golds, surpassing their tally at London 2012.

Storey has now won two events at these Games, her triumph in the 3km pursuit on the track making her Britain’s most successful female Paralympian.

The 38-year-old from Eccles, who was born without a functioning left hand, has won 24 Paralympic medals since her first Games as a swimmer in 1992.

Storey finished the 20km course, along the Pontal beach area in western Rio, in 27 minutes 22.42 seconds.

She was 90 seconds quicker than Anna Harkowska of Poland, with American Samantha Bosco taking bronze.

“I wasn’t 100% sure I had won it,” she told Channel 4. “Your time checks are brilliant but until the announcer says it you’re not sure.

“You focus on one race at a time and for me it was about getting a second gold at these Games and I got reminded I had 11 before these Games.”

Megan Giglia, who won GB’s first gold medal in Rio with victory in the individual pursuit on the track last week, finished sixth in the C1-3 time trial.
