With the news of Brexit, football analysts had earlier predicted that the English Premier League spending is likely to slump. But with over £1.17 billion recorded in transfers for this summer, the Premier League clubs have broken all records to sign players, and Brexit may not have any influence on clubs spending, maybe not too soon.
British football clubs went wild in the summer of 2016/2017, breaking spending records across the board, and splashing money like never before.
Premier League clubs spent more than £155 million on players on the last day of the window on Wednesday, breaking 2013’s record of £140 million.
In total, clubs in the Premier League spent £1.17 billion ($1.5 billion) on players this summer, the first time the summer total has passed the ten-figure mark for the first time in history.
Among the transfers made, there were numerous massive, multimillion-pound deals, which saw world-class players and talented youngsters move for astronomical fees.
Here, we rounded up the biggest deals in English football this summer.
Paul Pogba (£89m)
Paul Pogba moved from Juventus to Manchester United, for a world record fee. Allowed to leave Old Trafford in 2012 after failing to win-over manager Alex Ferguson, the hard playing 23-year-old midfielder with the dazzling haircuts and blistering shot returned as one of the biggest names in the Premier League.
John Stones (£47.5m)
The 22-year-old English centre back is moved from Everton to Manchester City.
The elegant centre-back became the biggest signing of Pep Guardiola at City after joining from Everton in a deal that made him the second most expensive defender in history behind David Luiz
Leroy Sane (£37m)
The 20-year German winger was one of the most sought after players in the world this summer and eventually left Schalke 04 to Premier league side, Manchester City.
Sane arrived in England with a burgeoning reputation, having scored eight goals in 33 Bundesliga appearances for Schalke last season and earned a place in Germany’s Euro 2016 squad. Side-lined to date by a hamstring injury, he could make his debut in the derby against Manchester United on September 10.
Granit Xhaka (£35m)
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger moved to address longstanding concerns about the lack of bite in his team’s midfield by sanctioning a big-money move for Switzerland international Xhaka. The 23-year-old’s arrival obliged England international Jack Wilshere, to seek a loan move elsewhere. Despite only being 23, he has played 44 games for Switzerland.
Shkodran Mustafi (£35m)
With Per Mertesacker and Gabriel down with injury, Wenger closed the gap in his back line with a move for Germany centre-back Mustafi on the penultimate day of the window. Mustafi, 24, previously spent three years at Everton, but made just one senior appearance. Despite previously playing in Spain, Mustafi has been capped 12 times by Germany.
David Luiz (£34m)
Chelsea re-signed Brazilian defender David Luiz from French Lique 1 side, Paris St-Germain for around £15m less than PSG paid to him in 2014.
Luiz ‘s deadline-day return to Stamford Bridge was one of the biggest surprises of the transfer window, after PSG paid £50 million to make him the world’s most expensive defender just two years earlier. However, Luiz, 29, was tipped to lose his place to compatriot Marquinhos at PSG, and has returned to England for a reported fee of around £34 million.
Sadio Mane (£34m)
Senegalese footballer wowed coaches over the last season, scoring the quickest hat-trick in Premier League history. Following two fine seasons with Southampton, during which he scored 25 goals in all competitions, 24-year-old Senegal Mane left St Mary’s to join Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool revolution. He has made an impressive start to life at Anfield, netting a fine solo goal in Liverpool’s 4-3 win at Arsenal on the opening day.
Michy Batshuayi (£33m)
The 22-year-old Belgian striker player moved from French side Marseille to Chelsea after beginning his career in 2011 at Standard Liège. He has three goals in seven international appearances for Belgium. Used mainly from the bench so far, he has scored three goals in four appearances.
Moussa Sissoko (£30m)
Tottenham signed the French midfielder from Newcastle United just before the transfer window closed on Wednesday night. Sissoko was relegated with Newcastle last year, but impressed with France at Euro 2016, a form that led to bumping up his price.
N’Golo Kante (£30m)
Kante is one of the many French footballers making it into the list. The defensive midfielder moved from last season’s Premier League champions Leicester City to London giants Chelsea.
