Jude Bellingham has described Real Madrid’s UEFA Champions League quarter-final second leg against Bayern Munich as a season-defining encounter, with the Spanish giants facing the prospect of another trophy-less campaign.
Madrid trail 2-1 from the first leg and must overturn the deficit in Munich to keep their hopes of silverware alive.
Real Madrid: Champions League: Bellingham confident of Real Madrid comeback against Arsenal
Speaking ahead of the clash, Bellingham admitted to the magnitude of the fixture, given the club’s struggles in domestic competitions.
“Considering what’s happened in the league and the cups, it’s almost a final for us tomorrow,” the England midfielder said.
“Given the situation we’re in, we want to still be playing for something rather than having games pass us by.”
Real Madrid sit nine points behind Barcelona in La Liga and have already fallen short in both the Spanish Super Cup and Copa del Rey, leaving the Champions League as their most realistic route to success.
“Any loss in the Champions League feels like a disaster,” Bellingham added. “It feels as if everything’s riding on this game. It’s all or nothing.”
The 22-year-old also acknowledged the threat posed by Harry Kane but insisted Madrid would do everything possible to stop the Bayern striker.
“He’s a sensational player. He’s almost perfected his craft, but hopefully we can stop him,” he said.
Bellingham, who is returning from a hamstring injury, admitted the season has been challenging on a personal level but expressed confidence in his current condition.
“The most difficult part of coming back is mental. A scan can say you’re fine, but you still have to overcome that barrier,” he noted.
He also dismissed off-field rumours questioning his professionalism, insisting his focus remains firmly on improving his game.
Madrid coach Álvaro Arbeloa struck a confident tone, backing his side’s pedigree in Europe.
“We are Real Madrid, a team that comes here to win. We have 15 Champions League titles and great players,” Arbeloa said. “We simply need to show who we are.”
