Bash Ali: Nigerian boxing legend returns at 69 after 21-year break

Nigerian boxing icon and former World Cruiserweight Boxing Champion, Bashiru Ali, commonly known as Bash Ali, made a sensational return to the boxing ring on Saturday, November 22, after a two-decade hiatus from active competition.

The 69-year-old legend, who won the World Boxing Federation (WBF) cruiserweight title in 1985, showcased his skills and footwork, amazing fans at the Shalom Park and Events Centre in Igando, Lagos.

Legendary Ring Return

Bash Ali’s comeback was the main event of a 12-bout bill tagged “Legendary Ring Return Fight Night”, promoted by New Era Promotions. He was joined in the ring by another veteran, former national and West African middleweight champion, Prince Bob Alagoro.

Both Bash Ali, who last fought professionally in 2004, and Prince Bob Alagoro went the distance for their 30-minute strength test.

For the past two decades, Bash Ali has been attempting to stage a Guinness World Record-setting fight in Nigeria. His return to the ring, even in a non-competitive exhibition, was a highly anticipated event.

Brigadier-General Idowu Lamina Akinlawon (rtd), CEO of New Era Promotions, described the match as the highlight of the night.

Bash Ali impressed spectators with his movement, footwork and showmanship, proving he still retains flashes of the boxing skills that made him a national icon.
