Defending champions, Nigeria’s Super Falcons, will on Saturday December 03 do battle with Cameroon at the final of the 10thedition of the African Women’s Cup of Nation at the Stade Ahmadou Ahidjo in Yaounde, a repeat of the 2014 final where Nigeria triumphed 2-0.

The Falcons defeated South Africa 1-0 in their semi-final clash on Tuesday in Limbe to earn a place in the final.

Striker Desire Oparanozie scored the only goal of the match on 54 minutes to ensure a repeat of the 2014 final in Windhoek, Namibia, which Nigeria won 2-0 for their seventh title.

It was a game that the South Africans dominated but failed to convert the numerous chances that came their way. For the first time, the Nigerians found themselves on the wrong footing as they were pinned for most part of the game into their own half by a determined South African side that controlled the midfield.

In the end, it was Nigeria who prevailed scoring from basically the best moment from a free-kick early into the second half. It was a repeat of the meeting between the two sides two years later in Namibia when Nigeria beat South Africa 2-1 at the same stage of the competition.

The Super Falcons, throughout this tournament have been consistent as an effective, ball playing side.  They count on the experience of Rita Chikwelu as the marshal in the midfield, to set up play, while Ngozi Okobi’s skillful play opened up options for the attack spearheaded by former Africa player of the year, Asisat Oshoala.

The focal point of Florence Omagbemi’s critics; the inclusion of old legs in her squad, is turning out to be the blessing for the team.

12 goals scored, and 1 conceded; the most incredible record for Nigeria at the AWCON 2016.

Host Cameroon reached the final for the successive time after beating Ghana 1-0 in Yaounde to set up a date with either Nigeria in Saturday’s final.

Midfielder Raissa Feudjio scored the only goal of the match on 71 minutes as ‘Les Lionnes’ deservingly booked their place in the grand finale and continue their march towards a historic first ever title in the flagship women’s competition.

Backed by a packed crowd at the Ahmadou Ahidjo Stadium in the capital, Yaounde, Cameroon will enjoy the support from the fans, but the Falcons need to keep their heads cool and remain focused on the title.

But Cameroon have proved to be a much improved side since then and the final clash will no doubt be a historic moment for either sides.

Falcons coach, Florence Omagbemi, tactical prowess will be seriously scrutinized on Saturday, and how effectively she displays them will determine the outcome of the game.

Well, Nigeria have an advantage after winning the tournament seven times and will be aiming for the eight title.
