Manchester United manager Ruben Amorim says Alejandro Garnacho has completely changed his attitude since being dropped for last December’s derby win over Manchester City.
Amorim’s shock decision to axe Garnacho and Marcus Rashford paid off in a 2-1 victory at the Etihad.
While Rashford remains out in the cold and has hinted at a possible Old Trafford exit, Amorim has urged the England forward to raise his standards if he wants to regain his place.
In contrast, Garnacho has silenced speculation about a potential sale before Monday’s transfer deadline, impressing Amorim with his improved attitude and performance. The 20-year-old continued his resurgence on Thursday, coming off the bench to assist Kobbie Mainoo’s goal in United’s 2-0 Europa League win over FCSB.
“He changed right away since that game against City—the way he understands things and realizes I just want to help him and win games,” Amorim said. “He changed in everything—the way he recovers, the way he communicates.”
Garnacho has often been used as an impact substitute under Amorim, despite starting more frequently under Erik ten Hag. The former Sporting Lisbon boss admitted he has pushed the young winger hard to unlock consistency.
“He understands that sometimes I’m a different coach, that I am demanding, and it can be tough,” Amorim added. “But it’s never in a bad way—it’s always for him. All the merit goes to Garnacho. He is improving, and we want to continue that.”
Meanwhile, speculation surrounds Mainoo’s future as United balance financial sustainability with squad reinforcements. However, the 19-year-old delivered a stellar performance against FCSB, scoring and assisting while playing in a more advanced midfield role.
Amorim believes reducing Mainoo’s defensive workload will allow him to thrive. “I don’t think it’s about the contract. Everyone in England sees him as a great player,” he said.
“It’s more about the position—he looked happier playing there. And when they’re happy, they play better. Simple as that.”
United return to Premier League action against Crystal Palace on Sunday.
