Aberdeen lifted the Scottish Cup trophy following a dramatic 4-3 penalty victory over Celtic on Saturday.

Both teams played out a 1-1 draw to extend the match into extra time and a penalty shootout, which Aberdeen won.

Aberdeen goalkeeper Dimitar Mitov produced big saves before and during a penalty shoot-out to end their 35-year wait for Scottish Cup glory.

Mitov saves Johnston and McGregor’s penalties in the shoot-out to help Aberdeen win the 2025 Scottish Cup.

“No words. Everybody doubted that we could do it, but we knew with a good game plan, following instructions, working hard, we’d get a victory,” Mitov told the BBC Scotland.

According to him, the team was outstanding in the final, and they enjoyed some lucky moments in the game.

“Sometimes, penalties go to luck. We rode our luck. We are cup champions, nobody cares how we did it.

“He [Thelin] is the best manager I’ve ever worked with. On a day-to-day basis, how he manages us, how he trains us, the little details he puts in. He always said, ‘When we win the final. ‘ There were no ‘ifs’.

“That mentality went to the boys, and we believed it. Everyone said ‘when not if’. That was the turning point today.”

Dave Cormack, Aberdeen chairman, said the team have waited so long for some silverware.

According to him, Aberdeen threw a spanner in the works for Celtic, who were favourites going into the match.

“It’s wonderful for our supporters, wonderful for the north east, it’s been a long time coming,” Aberdeen chairman Dave Cormack told BBC Scotland.

“I’m just delighted today how we can perform, I’m pleased for Jimmy and all the players.

“An awful lot of people wrote us off today, lambs to the slaughter, some of them said,” Cormack told BBC Scotland.

Jack Milne, Aberdeen defender, said winning the Scottish Cup is the best feeling of his career.

“We had the belief. All of us knew we were capable of coming here and getting this result. It’s amazing. It’s a dream come true,” Milne told BBC Scotland.
