2026 World Cup: Trump envoy urges FIFA to swap Iran for Italy

In a move that has sent shockwaves through both sporting and diplomatic circles, a senior envoy to U.S. President Donald Trump has reportedly lobbied FIFA to replace Iran with Italy at the 2026 World Cup.

According to the Financial Times, the proposal was made by Trump’s envoy Paolo Zampolli, who said he suggested the idea to both Trump and FIFA president Gianni Infantino.

“I confirm I have suggested to Trump and Infantino that Italy replace Iran at the World Cup,” Zampolli said. “I’m an Italian native, and it would be a dream to see the Azzurri at a US-hosted tournament. With four titles, they have the pedigree to justify inclusion.”

Italy, four-time FIFA World Cup champions, failed to qualify for the World Cup after a play-off defeat to Bosnia and Herzegovina, marking their third consecutive absence from the tournament.

The suggestion has raised concerns over potential political interference in football governance, particularly as Iran have already qualified and publicly affirmed their readiness to compete. FIFA has also indicated that Iran remain part of the tournament.

The 2026 World Cup, co-hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico, will be the largest in history, featuring 48 teams. Under FIFA regulations, the governing body retains discretion to replace a team only in cases of withdrawal or exclusion.

Iranian officials have reiterated their intention to participate, although discussions with FIFA have included the possibility of venue adjustments due to security concerns.

The development is likely to intensify scrutiny of FIFA’s relationship with political actors ahead of a tournament already shaped by broader geopolitical tensions.
