Leader of Anambra Vigilante Services in Onitsha North Local Government Area, Chinenye Ihenko, says security has been intensified to secure Onitsha Main Market and others in the state against criminal elements in the ember months.

In an interview with BusinessDay in Onitsha, the commercial hub of the state, Ihenko assured the visiting traders within and outside the country of the safety of their goods and lives in all the markets in Onitsha and environs before, during and after the period.

Ihenko who has been honoured with several awards for his contribution towards the security of Onitsha, all parts of the state and the entire country also assured Anambra indigenes or visitors of their safety during the Yuletide celebration in the state.

“We have intensified security operations with the police and other security agencies to make the state safe for our visitors, particularly the traders, our brothers and sisters who will be coming home during and after the period.

“I am very happy with the system we are having with the police and other security agencies and the way our governor is fighting to secure lives and property in the state. We have been planning, you know security is everybody’s business, secondly, we have a strategy which we are applying so that people can come and go freely in the state.

“For our friends, brothers and sisters who will be coming home for the Yuletide and the ones who will come to patronise us; they will come and go back safely. We are planning seriously,” Ihenko said.

He advised the hoodlums to desist from their nefarious activities in the markets in the state.

“You might be doing it for years and succeeding, the best is to follow the right way. My advice to them is to desist from their evil ways so that they don’t end their lives as a result. I want to caution them that Anambra state must continue to be the safest in the country,” he affirmed.

Ihenko appealed to the traders to always be conscious of their environment and stop being careless with the safety of their goods. “Some of them are very careless, and this is a problem; they must be more careful always to protect their goods.

“They should also be careful with job men who give their goods to take to customers. This is happening most days in the markets, the job men carry their goods and run away,” he said.

Ihenko said that in spite of the challenges, they would continue to work in concert with other security operatives and stakeholders for criminals not to hijack Onitsha and its environs.

“Whatever you are doing, you are bound to face challenges. We have decided to do this job. It is a voluntary and humanitarian service to our people. We can’t go back for criminals to take over the state. We are committed to doing more to salvage our people”.

He commended those who considered him worthy of the awards for recognising his modest contributions to ensure that the people sleep with their two eyes closed.

Ihenko said the awards would serve as an encouragement to him and his people, promising that they would not relent in their efforts to secure the society.
