2,000 people die from counterfeit drugs a day, and up to 30% of a country’s pharmaceutical drugs can be bogus – mPedigree is a nifty coding system that lets consumers check the surety of their supply by sending a text message from even the most basic phone. ‘Patients should not feel that every time they buy an important item such as medicine they are gambling with their lives,’ says mPedigree founder and Ashoka fellow, Bright Simons, and their mission is to ‘ensure and communicate the quality of all life-impacting products.’
mPedigree has been named among the 2014 Nominet Trust 100 (NT100) – a global list of 100 inspiring ventures from around the world.
The Nominet Trust 100 celebrates the people and organisations who are using digital technology to change the world for the better. Each year, it brings together, 100 of the world’s most inspiring examples of social innovation, where digital technologies have been used to tackle a significant social challenge.
The NT100 aims to celebrate how much is being done by social innovators to tackle real social challenges, often under the radar, learn from what has driven these social tech entrepreneurs and provide insights into what makes it possible for a social tech venture to have an impact at scale and inspire others to follow in their steps, to raise the ambitions of social innovators using technology, and accelerate the use of digital technology as a tool for significant social change.
Projects featured on the list are using technology to tackle some of the world’s biggest social problems from education and human rights abuses to climate change and health.
Following a global call for nominations earlier this year mPedigree was selected by an independent global steering committee in recognition of its invention and successful deployment of the Goldkeys authentication platform in multiple countries around the world. This platform has harnessed leading-edge web and mobile technologies in the fight against counterfeit products, especially fake and dangerous medicines, and thereby provided millions of people, of all socio-economic backgrounds, with a free means to confirm the quality status of their medicines and other high-value products, instantly and stress-free.
