How did we get here?

It has become necessary to ask ourselves why so much hate in the polity. Every one of the activities and considerations is hinged on either the part of the country one comes from or the individual’s religion. It is sad and unfortunate that Nigerians have reduced themselves to haters of one another, for no just cause. The past one week plus had been spent by some Nigerians spreading rumours over the health condition of the President who took his official leave to rest in the United Kingdom While leaving, he never told anyone that he was going for medical treatment, but the social media had been awash with insinuations that the leader of the most populous black nation on earth was in a difficult situation. In fact, rumours that he had kicked the bucket were so strong that the President’s handlers were running helter-skelter to put a lie to the mischievous creations. Even at that, some die-hard pessimists are saying that they are waiting to see what happens tomorrow when the President’s leave is expected to end. But come to think of it, how did we descend to this inhuman level as to be wishing our leaders dead? It was even said that some people were rejoicing and clinking glasses over the situation, and I ask, but why? Someone said to me that the reaction of these people was not just because of the person of Buhari, but a reflection of their level of sadness, disappointment and frustration over several years of maladministration by a small group of people who call themselves political class. The individual said that it was a way of showing that they are tired of the shenanigans going on in government. When asked if it is not desirable to pray for our leaders as the Holy Book enjoins us to do, the response was telling, “We are told that leaders that rule well are worthy of double honour, not those who treat us like rags.”
