Can your self image ruin your career/business?

In the business and career world lots of characteristics tend to play huge roles in determining how successful/unsuccessful workers  could be.  Different workers in different parts of the world have  standards different from each other.

What do i mean by self image?  Self image entails the total body package  of your body/Personaity (in &out). You could wear very expensive designers suit, wears expensive cologne/perfumes but if you are ill mannered and crude in your attitude, your self image has a snag and is not complete.

That now brings in the question of which area of self image could one concentrate more? The outward appearance or the inside? I get this critical question everyday and every time i give public business talks on GROOMING YOUR SELF IMAGE TO SUCCEED.  Explore these scenarios below.

‘’Did you see that lady today?……i mean that lady that wears very expensive suits and very kind, generous but sadly  her big stomach spoils the beauty and value of the suits she wears’’

…..   That tall girl that lives by the corner of the street ….i mean the one with dark and brown spots all over her face…very quiet &respectful girl but her face is a total mess’’.

Have you heard? That man that lives in that big house opposite us just got arrested? Which one? E-eemm..the one that can hardly walk due to his Michelin man stomach…..the one that always give money to beggers at that junction?…’’.

People might not even know the names of most people they see but merely describing them to their listeners what they look like makes it easy for them to comprehend whom they are talking about. When people use some characteristics or features to describe others, what they are actually doing is, describing those peoples total body/self image. What they also say goes a long way to tell what kind of person you are so ensuring that both your outward and inside package are in place matters a lot and should not be one sideded.

Any way, my talk today is carving out an identity with your body image in a way that when others describe you, your description will appeal to those listening. Ofcourse such nice descriptions can also earn you good points in some aspects of life you might not expect.  Take for instance the description above of the lady with nice suits and bulging stomach. It could be someone describing her to a possible suitor or Employer . Such description could make her lose the chance of hooking her prince charming or getting her dream job. Let us face it folks, we all know that its not fair to judge people just by their outward looks only but inner qualities matters too. Sadly enough, in as much as we all know this, we still get moved by what we see on the outside first. Most people absorb others first by their outward appearance before settling down to check out the inner qualities. This works a lot for men. Most men are very visual and what they see first when it comes to the opposite sex matters a lot to them before they consider the inside qualities.  Agree/Disagree….your call!!! Bring-it-on!!

Your Body Image says a lot about your personality and how people will react to you.  Your weight is out of control and you fold your hands saying  it is genetic.  I belong to the group of persons that disagree with this gist of –‘’ you are fat or overweight because your father/mother is/was fat’’  Did you ever wonder what made them fat in the first place? To be honest, in my years of experience in coaching people with weight problem to lose weight,  overweight is mostly due to bad eating habits and sedentary lifestyle.  If your family have lots of ‘’orobos’’  be wise enough to start early to watch your body especially your diet and activities. Sure, it is possible!!!  You do not sit and watch yourself fall out of shape simply because, you believe fatness runs in your family and it is impossible to control it.   Says who…. huh?

  Are you aware that most people have lost their dream jobs/career due to obesity? How do you expect an employer who is looking for a front desk/PR personnel/marketer to employ an obese applicant who cannot even climb stairs without panting like a lizard that falls down from an iroko tree? It does not matter how attractive your CV looks….forget the job!

How about you joining your friends for a good swim or a pool party and lo, you step out in your bikini and everyone in the pool took a leap as if crocodiles were being unleashed into the pool? They all took to their heals because one look at your body, the Strectmarks and cellulites on your thighs, hands and backside, the eczema, craw-craw chased them out of the pool. The worst part is that, some might be thinking you are infected with some kind of horrible skin disease not knowing you are suffering from cellulite  which ofcourse is not infectous.  Yes, Cellulite/stretchmarks are very repulsive sights but not infectous like eczema etc.  Do you blame them for leaving the pool for you alone?  They might even give you a nick name there and then…names like..that eczema-stretchmark body man/woman. Trust me, bad names does not fade away easily and if you love your self, you would not like to acquire one.

Again, now that the Ebola scare craze has decreased , some Nigerians still feel it is a myth. Some are still living with their dirty habits. How about people describing your personality as – ‘’that man/woman that hardly washes his/her hands before eating eba/fufu/amala/tuwo at mama Nkechi buka?’’

  Your body is like a house and the way you  maintain it serves and speaks for you every where you go including your work place and people you do business with. So you now know the answer to my today topic huh?
