Nyesom Wike, Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), has commended President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for his swift assent to the Electoral Act Amendment Bill 2026, describing the move as a demonstration of the President’s commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s democracy.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by his Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, Wike praised Tinubu for signing the amended bill into law less than 24 hours after its passage by the National Assembly.

According to the minister, the prompt assent underscores the administration’s resolve to deepen the democratic process and enhance the credibility of elections across the country.

Wike added that the timely approval had put to rest what he described as unnecessary protests by individuals allegedly preparing excuses ahead of future electoral contests.

He emphasised that democracy is an evolving process that requires continuous reforms to strengthen the electoral system.

“Democracy has always been a work in progress,” Wike said, noting that periodic reviews of the Electoral Act would help improve Nigeria’s democratic framework.

He congratulated President Tinubu and members of the National Assembly for what he described as their collective effort to reinforce democratic governance, particularly commending the President for acting swiftly in signing the bill into law.
