Governor Abdullahi Sule of Nasarawa State has defended his decision to endorse a preferred successor ahead of the 2027 governorship election, insisting that he acted within his constitutional and democratic rights as leader of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in the state.

Sule annointed Senator Ahmed Wadada, representing Nasarawa West, in the 10th National Assembly as his preferred successor in 2027 when his tenure would have elapsed.

Speaking during a statewide broadcast in Lafia on Friday, Sule said his endorsement would not undermine the credibility of the APC primaries, stressing that the party would adopt direct primaries to ensure fairness and equal participation for all aspirants.

The governor explained that the adoption of direct primaries was in line with the APC constitution and reflected the wishes of key stakeholders across the state.

“As governor of Nasarawa State and leader of our great party in the state, I have exercised my constitutional and democratic right to support and endorse an aspirant whom I believe possesses the capacity, experience and vision to consolidate on the gains we have collectively made,” Sule said.

He, however, assured party members that the process would remain transparent and credible, adding that his endorsement did not shut the door against other contestants.

Sule also appealed to political actors, youths and supporters to avoid violence, inflammatory comments and misinformation as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections.

“No ambition is greater than the peace, unity and progress of our dear state,” the governor said. He urged security agencies to remain professional and impartial during the electioneering process.
