Funsho Williams’ legacy still resonates 20 years after his death, says Adeoye

Laja Adeoye, the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) governorship candidate for the 2027 Lagos State election, has paid tribute to Funsho Williams, the late Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, describing him as “a rare gem” whose legacy continues to inspire the struggle for good governance in Lagos.

Adeoye made the remarks in a statement on Sunday to commemorate the 20th remembrance of Williams’ death.

Williams, a renowned engineer and politician, was murdered at his Lagos residence on July 27, 2006, months before the 2007 governorship election. He had previously ran on the platform of the party in the 2003 gubernatorial election.

His killing shocked the nation and remains one of Nigeria’s most high-profile unresolved political assassinations.

Remembering the late politician, Adeoye described Williams as a man of vision, integrity and courage whose contributions to Lagos politics have endured despite his untimely death.

“Twenty years ago, on this solemn day, Lagos and the democratic family of our great Party lost a rare gem, a man of vision, integrity, and uncommon courage. Late Engr. Funsho Williams, the former PDP Governorship Candidate for Lagos State, was taken from us on 27th July 2006, but his light has never dimmed,” he said.

The APM governorship candidate said Williams should be remembered not merely through tributes but by preserving the values he stood for.

“We remember him not with empty words, but with firm determination. We honour him by remaining united, by staying true to the people, and by ensuring that the ideals he lived and died for shall never be forgotten,” Adeoye stated.

He prayed for the repose of Williams’ soul and urged political leaders and residents of Lagos to continue drawing inspiration from his legacy.

“May the soul of this distinguished son of Lagos continue to rest in perfect peace. May his memory remain a blessing and a charge to us all,” he added.
