Osagie Ize-Iyamu

The defeated candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the last Saturday’s Edo governorship election, Osagie Ize-Iyamu Wednesday held a closed door meeting with the Yobe State Governor and the Chairman of APC Caretaker/Extra-Ordinary National Convention Planning Committee, Mai-Mala Buni and Kogi State Governor, Yahaya Bello in Abuja.

Though the purpose of the closed door meeting which took place at the Abuja residence of Governor Buni was kept secret, BusinessDay learnt that the discussion centered on the way forward with Ize-Iyamu after the Edo governorship election.

According to reliable sources privy to the meeting, the party leadership was persuading Ize-Iyamu to accept in good faith the outcome of the election and jettisoned taking legal action.

The APC leadership through a statement signed by Governor Buni had congratulated the winner of the election, Governor Godwin Obaseki of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

In the statement titled, “Edo State Governorship Election: Victory for Democracy”, APC noted the “conduct of the election and its outcome represent victory for Nigeria’s democracy”

The statement read in parts: “the September 19, 2020 Edo State Governorship election is over, the winner has been declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the person of the Mr. Godwin Obaseki, candidate of the People Democratic Party (PDP).

“We hereby congratulate the winner of the election, the people of Edo State and all Nigerians. The peaceful conduct of the election and its outcome represent victory for Nigeria’s democracy.”
