Crisis in Senate over denial of Omo-Agege as head constitution review committee

Omo-Agege

Indications have emerged that there is serious crisis brewing within the ranks of the Senate over a reportedly alleged denial of Deputy Senate President, Omo-Agege to head the constitution review committee.

The Senate will resume on Tuesday and top on it agenda is to ensure review of the nation’s constitution amendment.

The Senate President, Ahmad Lawan has announced that the constitution review committee would be set and announced very soon.

It is traditional in Senate that the constitution review is headed by the DSP at Red Chambers while the Deputy Speaker chairs it in the House of Representatives.

But there are insinuations that Lawan will not appoint his deputy, Omo-Agege to chair the committee following recent allegations that he was convicted by the Courts in the United States of America (USA).

Already, National Assembly sources say that Omo-Agege is bent on fighting his way to head the committee, even against the wish of Lawan, and as it is customary in the Senate.

While fielding questions from newsmen in Abuja, Monday, Lawan dispelled the insinuation and said he is committed to doing the right thing.

Lawan said Omo- Agege will head the committee as Chairman in line with age long tradition of the Senate and the House of Representatives as far as such committees are concerned.

“Such insinuation is out of place , it is traditional that whenever a committee on Constitution review is set up in both the Senate and the House of Representatives for the Deputy President of the Senate and Deputy Speaker to head them as Chairman.

“The Senate will set up the committee latest by next week and the Deputy President of the Senate, Distinguished Senator Ovie Omo-Agege will chair it.
“He has the capacity , experience and knowledge to to give the committee the leadership required,” Lawan stated

Meanwhile, Lawan has lamented that the security architecture of the country has failed.

Consequently, lawan is calling for review of the security system to end loss of lives and property in the country.

“We have had series of engagements before but the escalation now has made it mandatory that we have to have a definite position as a government because we just cannot play politics with security issues.

“Lives are stake. Therefore the Senate will take a position on how security in the country should be. We believe that the security architecture should be restructured.

“The present system does not give us the type of outcome that we need. Whether it is the federal, state or local government; Even the traditional rulers or others, the most important thing is to secure the lives and property of Nigerians and we would do that,” he stated.
