Benin Monarch backs judiciary workers, asks governors to grant financial autonomy

The Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II has urged governors across the states to grant financial autonomy to the judiciary in line with the constitution.

The royal father noted that for equity and justice to prevail in the country, the judiciary should not be subjected to all kinds of ill-treatment before approving fund for its day-to-day operations.

Oba Ewaure II made the appeal on Thursday when Justice Esther Edigin, the outgoing chief judge of Edo State led top members of the bench on a valedictory visit to the palace in Benin.

The Benin monarch emphasised that the country cannot move forward without full financial autonomy for the judicial arm of government.

According to the Oba, no society would be free from corruption without financial freedom for the judiciary.

Earlier, Justice Esther Edigin, who informed the monarch of her retirement from active service, thanked the Oba for the prayers throughout her time in office.

The outgoing chief judge was sworn in as the seventh substantive chief judge of Edo State on Friday, November 22, 2019, and will be retiring on Monday, May 17, 2021.
