Makinde transfers power to deputy as assembly approves month-long leave

 Seyi Makinde, Oyo State Governor  will proceed on a one-month annual leave from August 10, with Bayo Lawal, Deputy Governor taking over the administration of the state after the State House of Assembly approved the temporary transfer of authority on Thursday.

The governor’s request, contained in a formal letter read during the Assembly’s plenary session, allows Lawal to oversee government affairs and ensure continuity in governance until Makinde returns to office on September 14.

The approval by lawmakers signals a smooth transition of power within the state’s leadership structure, as the Assembly expressed confidence in the deputy governor’s capacity to manage the day-to-day running of government during the governor’s absence.

The letter was read by the Deputy Speaker of the House, Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the session in the absence of Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin.

The lawmakers unanimously granted the request and directed Deputy Governor Lawal to maintain the momentum of ongoing government programmes, supervise administrative activities, and ensure that public services remain uninterrupted throughout the period.

Makinde’s temporary handover follows constitutional practice, which allows elected officials to delegate responsibilities when proceeding on official leave or extended absence.

The governor is expected to resume duties on September 14 after completing his annual vacation.
