Significant realignment involving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) has commenced ahead of the 2027 general elections. Notably, high-profile PDP members have defected to the APM to form a “third-force” or alternative platform.

The strategic defection of key PDP members is driven by the necessity to escape severe, ongoing internal crises within the party and to secure a stable platform for the upcoming polls. Reasons for this shift include avoiding leadership disputes and legal challenges that have plagued the PDP, particularly following Supreme Court rulings that nullified certain party conventions.

Governance and stability drive strategic pivots

Notable among the defectors is Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, who reportedly moved to the APM citing the requirement for a more stable political environment. By moving his faction to the APM, Governor Mohammed has positioned Bauchi State as a central hub for the new political arrangement, aiming to maintain a unified front for future contests.

In Lagos State, governorship aspirant Prince Laja Adeoye has also joined the APM. This move confirms an agreement to collaborate and bypass the issues arising from the PDP’s internal leadership vacuum. Similarly, Shina Peller has joined the APM in Oyo State as part of a strategic pivot to strengthen the opposition.

Building a national coalition against the APC

These movements appear to be a strategic coordination of key stakeholders across several states rather than a formal national party-to-party merger. The objective is to form a new coalition platform capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027. The APM is increasingly viewed by these politicians as a stable alternative free from infighting.

Governor Mohammed declared that the decision followed extensive consultation with stakeholders and supporters. The defecting members have explicitly stated that these moves are not a rejection of PDP ideals, but a tactical necessity to stay focused on 2027 preparations. The coalition is designed to unite opposition forces, particularly in the South-West, to improve their electoral prospects.
